The Riverland Wine Region is the most important wine region to the South Australian viticultural industry. The land is flat and the soil is a sandy loam that is moderately fertile. The climate being continental is sufficient for the production of fortified wines. That means cool nights and hot, dry days. Most of the rain in the region falls in winter.

This rainfall is one of the factors contributing to the regions dependence on an irrigation system. The system irrigates part of the Murray River priming 5,000 hectares of horticultural land. As with many areas around the Murray, this region is being exposed to an increasing salinity problem. This is a product of rising water tables due to land clearing and concentrated irrigation.

This region, not only serves the wine industry, but also environmental protection centres. This region is the base of eco wine tourism, with a wine and wetlands station being established to monitor and restore the surrounding land.

Harvest time: Mid February to mid March.
