The oldest town in the Riverland, founded as Australia's first irrigation settlement in 1887, Renmark boasts one of the Riverland's best-developed riverfronts, abuzz year-round.
Cruises aboard the Mighty River Rambler depart daily and the Paddle steamer Industry (featured in the movie The River Kings) fires up on the first Sunday of the month. The visitor centre is close by to help with enquiries and bookings. Many other fleets operate out from or near Renmark, as it is also a popular house boating port. Many houseboats are available for hire, including the Liba Liba fleet. They were the first to set the trend in the 1950s and still ply the river today.
Renmark's founders were a pair of enterprising Canadians, the Chaffey brothers. Their home, Olivewood Historic Homestead, is open to visitors and well worth a look. Renmark also claims the largest rose garden in the southern hemisphere.
And from scenic flights to water-skiing or backwater dinghy cruises, Renmark visitors can make the most of every minute. The only suspension bridge on the Murray can be found at nearby Paringa. Twice daily the bridge lifts to let river traffic pass beneath - quite a sight!
