Beachport

Overview
Bookmark

The beautiful seaside town of Beachport boasts one of the longest jetties in South Australia, and rarely does a day go by without anglers of all ages trying their luck at landing a prized catch. A relaxed atmosphere prevails at this historic whaling port located on the north-western tip of Rivoli Bay, with the town offering a combination of scenic coastal splendour and opportunities for adventure.

Safe swimming abounds at the sandy beaches, with the mild conditions also proving perfect for a range of water sports. Inland, Lake George is a popular spot for locals and visitors, and is home to a wide variety of species including black swans and migratory birds.

The Pool of Siloam is unique to Beachport. With a salt concentration seven times greater than the sea, it is an ideal swimming spot creating unusual buoyancy, and has a reputation for its powerful healing properties.

Beachport is also a town steeped in history, with museums and historic buildings providing windows to the past. For those keen to step back even further in time, a large midden heap at Three Mile Rocks provides a fascinating reminder of the local Aboriginal heritage.

Features

  • Check out Beachport Jetty, one of the longest in South Australia
  • Visit Beachport Conservation Park and witness the beautiful coastal scenery
  • Don't miss out on the Pool of Siloam, with reputed therapeutic qualities!
  • Have a picnic in Centenary Park
  • Beachport Old Wool and Grain Store, the site for the local museum
  • Bompa's By The Sea, Beachport's original hotel
  • The Rugged Coast: The two tracks to the coast are suitable only for 4WD vehicles or walking. Conventional vehicles can get to the coast as far as Pigeon Cove along the Beachport Council Scenic Drive

Features

  • The Small Lakes: Wooley Lake is a small saltwater lagoon. Two Lakes (actually only one) is a freshwater pond. Each lake is only a short walk from the Five Mile Drift road, tucked behind the dunes. Small birds frequent these quiet and sheltered areas, especially in summer
  • The Lake George Shore: Dense paperbarks protect the shores of Lake George. Packin Point is a fine spot to watch for wading birds. Look for the different actions of birds feeding. You may camp under the trees in summer. The area may be too wet in winter
  • Five Mile Drift: At Five Mile Drift a large sand dune has drifted into Lake George creating a lovely white sandy beach. The area is good for sailing and picnics in the summer sun. Shallow water makes a safe swimming place
