Kangaroo Island lies just off the coast one and a half hours drive south of Adelaide. It is an idyllic natural hideaway. Bordeaux style blends are proving to be one of the gems from this maritime oasis.

The island is extraordinary for its natural history and beauty. There is a diversity of wildlife including colonies of Australian sea lions, little penguins, New Zealand fur seals and the once endangered Cape Barren goose. Vegetation types are also many and varied with eucalyptus forests, mallee scrubland and riverine mangrove which coveres the western side of the island. To the east, gentle green rolling hills, grazed by sheep. A scene reminiscent of the Welsh influence.

The main vineyard area is on the north side of the island near the island's largest town, Kingscote. The island industry is very young, with most vineyards being established post 1993.

The climate is maritime marked by strong winds and moderate humidity. The winter is cool and wet, the summer hot and dry. The island is well known for its reddy orange ironstone soils as well as sandy loams that are rather alkaline.

Harvest time: Early March to mid April. Tourism is very important to the economy of the island. People from Adelaide frequently visit at every chance and it also attracts many intrastate and international travellers. The region is very much a ready-made market for island wine, with distribution throughout the island's fine restaurants and bars.
