Penong is the first town you reach as you travel west along the Eyre Hwy from Ceduna, on the Eyre Peninsula.
It's a good 'watering hole' before the long journey across the Nullarbor Plain, which would have to be one of Australia's greatest road trips.
Penong offers a pub with beer garden, a couple of stores and a caravan park. Just south of Penong, you'll find the highly acclaimed Cactus Beach, where surfers from all over Australia and overseas can be found year-round.
Although the land surrounding Penong is private property, the owner permits camping in a natural environment. Toilets and bore water showers are provided, and firewood is supplied nightly.
Local Area
Cactus has three perfect surfing breaks - Castles and Cactus both left handers and Caves, a powerful right-hand break. Definitely worth a look!
