Port Wakefield has that sea-faring town atmosphere with its emphasis on recreational fishing and its wharf, where small boats await the fishermen.
The 'Proof Range', established in the 1920's, sits on the southern side of the town at Bald Hill, itself a popular fishing spot. The large expanse of sand exposed at low tide provides ideal conditions for the Army's testing program.
Today the town is well known to the travelling public, by its presentation along the highway - with many roadhouses along this strip providing valuable refreshment facilities for the weary traveller. The town encourages tourists to venture off the highway, take a break, and discover the heritage and charm that lies behind the busy corridor of Highway One.
