172km from Adelaide and 44 km from the historic copper township of Burra, this is a very isolated, but pleasant, small patch of green in the desert.
The town's closeness to Burra meant that in the 1840s prospectors entered the area searching for possible copper mining sites. They were partially successful. The 'Wheal Sarah' mine was established and worked for a number of years, you can now do a interesting tour of the mine.
Trout fishing on the Broughton River is popular and Spalding prides itself on its sporting clubs and facilities.
Spalding developed the Mid North Games, an annual event held over several weeks with a diverse range of sports and competitors, including Aussie Rules Football and Sheep Dog Trials. The area is well known for its sheep and cattle stud farms and you may also see many beehives when driving through the area as Spalding also produces honey.
