Springton is located approximately 60km northeast of Adelaide’s CBD. Originally known as Black Springs, the small township is situated at the very south-eastern border of the Barossa Valley. The main claim to fame for Springton is the dwelling of the earliest European settler, Friedrich Herbig, who lived in a hollowed out red gum tree that still stands in the main street.
The Herbig Homestead, built after his family grew to large for the confines of the tree, is also in the main street and presently offers accommodation. The Heritage Homestead centre includes the original cottage, a cellar and a barn. The centre offers an exceptional insight into the beginnings of the early Barossa Valley settlers.
