Situated 79 km northeast of Adelaide, Seppeltsfield is little more than a settlement established exclusively for the production of wine.
Joseph Seppelt was a German emigrant that arrived in South Australia in 1849. He started growing tobacco but the crop was unsuccessful. He then moved to grapes and the huge Seppelt Wine Company was established. The business expanded quickly as he concentrated on the production of wine, much of which he sold along the Murray where it was transported by paddle-steamer.
It is near impossible to ignore Seppeltsfield Winery. It is characterised by infinite rows of palm trees, turreted buildings and oddly shaped wine vats. By the 1890s the winery was named as the most modern in the world. Presently, it is a complete winery adventure with wine tasting, cellar door sales, picnic facilities and tours of the property.
