Barossa Valley Wine Region

The Barossa Valley, with its strong German background is a place full of character. It is rich in both heritage and tradition. The region was settled by Silesian migrants who farmed the valley, along with British migrants and their descendants who grazed the adjacent hill country. The region takes in the valley and the Barossa Ranges and its major towns include Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston.

The first vines, planted in the 1840s were followed by rapid expansion, first to supply the local market and then the British market. The Barossa's expansion was fuelled by the production of fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain.

The Barossa Valley is also an important food producing area. The descendants of Silesian immigrant community fostered the development of a unique Barossa cuisine. Famous food names such as Maggie Beer and Beerenberg jams are based here. Food Barossa is also another initiative to stamp the regional qualities of the Barossa's produce. The bounty of the valley goes on display at the biennial Barossa Vintage Festival one of Australia's longest running food and wine festivals.
