Macclesfield is an historic township nestled in the Mt Lofty Ranges, on the banks of the Angus River, 45 kms south of Adelaide. It is one of only a few private towns established in South Australia in 1837. This small town still retains much of its Old World charm in this present era. Macclesfield is surrounded by rich farmland, native bushland and vineyards, making it a pleasant location for a day in the Adelaide Hills. Designed around a village square, the town was a thriving major transport route during the 1850s gold rush.
It still has wonderful examples of early stone architecture that remain as dwellings to this day. Today, there are two pubs (one traditional English style), a winery and an excellent growers’ market, which is held every Sunday.
