You're never far from anywhere if you stay in the city and the Allegra, although situated in a seemingly derelict part of town, is just a couple of minutes walk to the start of the commercial hub. Adelaide city itself is well-planned and easy to navigate, and the country regions outside the city are lovely.
I would not bill the Allegra as a five-star hotel by international standards. At the most, they would be four stars and that's by overlooking minor shortcomings. We stayed there for nearly a week recently and found the hotel had very good service when prompted. The room itself was fine, once you got over the window view of the bathroom, but we think there are some re-design ideas the hotel could consider.
Bathroom:
The sliding doors were always one off the rails and it was never fixed. This caused noisy grappling and shoving each time we tried to slide the doors open or close, with only partial success overall.
The faucet and basin design are not friendly, we spent the first day getting used to water shooting at us and had to be constantly aware of it every day. By the way no one could ever get used to the smell of Adelaide tap water but charging guests $8 for a litre of bottled water is atrocious gouging. We suggest supplying a water jug in the room for guests to fill themselves. A kettle isn't quite the same.
There is no towel rack in the bathroom.
The cords for the bathroom blinds are too short - they required us to climb into the bathtub to lower the blinds, which never quite reached the bottom of the window anyway.
We had to request for shower gels and soap for the shower. There were no bath salts or similar despite the availability of a bath tub. The bottle designs for the complimentary shampoo, conditioner etc could be more user friendlier.
Room:
Slippers should have been supplied and newspapers an optional extra.
There was no TV user guide or program schedule available except for Fox Sports. The TV was busted when we arrived but it was fixed quickly. We took the opportunity to get a tutorial on how to use the remote control and also the light switches in the room.
The phone cum radio cum clock is pretty tacky. Could Allegra see to adding an iPhone/iPod dock in their rooms?
The black-out curtains didn't reach side to side.
On our last night, we had the neighbours from hell. The hotel responded promptly each time we lodged a noise complaint. In fact, the hotel responded quickly to all our requests, for missing items etc. So although there were minor exasperations, our overall experience at Allegra was positive and the location convenient.
