Bowen is located only 5 minutes off the highway, half way between Mackay and Townsville. Just a short drive from the Whitsunday's, Bowen is certainly "Top of the Whitsunday's".

Bowen is surrounded by 8 beautiful sandy beaches, all within 5km drive of the Post Office, where you can snorkel and see coral reef fish within metres of the shore. The waters around Horseshoe Bay, Grays Bay and Murray Bay are popular dive spots for scuba diving enthusiasts. Fishing is also a major attraction, commercially or for leisure, either from the beaches and rocky outcrops or the nearby islands.

Bowen has panoramic lookouts over ocean and islands, or back to the local farmlands. A number of walking tracks take you to lookouts with breathtaking scenery. There are 32 murals in the Bowen/Collinsville Region, depicting the early history of Bowen and Collinsville.

In the centre of Bowen lies Mullers Lagoon picturesque garden covering 24 hectares. This is a sanctuary for many wading birds and waterfowl, which is about to be made even better by the construction of a 'bird hide'.

Mullers Lagoon is a vast sanctuary for both waterfowl and birdwatchers.

Bowen offers a wide range of accommodation to suit every budget and taste; most of which are on or near the beach. There is a twin cinema complex, which includes a heritage cinema, and a number of restaurants that cook the wonderful local seafood.
