Innisfail 

Innisfail is a prosperous, colourful town, situated on the North and South Johnstone Rivers, and is surrounded by rich green landscape. Lush sugar plantations flow from the dense rainforest coastline to the thick jungles of the Palmerston National Park to the west. Sugar has been grown here since the early 1880's. Tea, bananas, pawpaws and other exotic tropical fruits are also grown within the area.

Today Innisfail has shown great resilience after the devastation of Cyclone Larry in 2006. The famous art deco buildings have restored and many aspects of the town are once again thriving. The economy of Innisfail is mainly dependent on the surrounding sugar cane farms around the town.

The best way to get to know Innisfail is to take the town walk. See the characteristic art deco architecture that eventuated after cyclone devastation in 1918 where the town was rebuilt in the style of the era. All in all, Innisfail is a regional centre with tropical weather and a laid back atmosphere.

Take the riverside walk, which will take you past a series of panels, each representing different stages in the life and times of Innisfail. The town is also a rich hub of multiculturalism with Australian, Italian, Dutch, South Sea Islander and Hmong communities making Innisfail what it is today.

Be sure to visit the unique Chinese Temple in Ernest Street. The ‘Joss House’ is another item of historical significance detailing that of the times of the gold rush. Chinese miners settled here and the Joss House is a brilliant symbol of another culture.

Your stay should include a stop over at the Warrina Lakes area, great for picnicking, bushwalking through pockets of rainforest, bird watching in the wetland lakes and walking through an Aboriginal Bush tucker garden.

There are several islands and reefs off the coast from Innisfail. Why not explore them, accessible from Flying Fish Point, Mourilyan Harbour and Kurrimine Beach.
