Cook landed to formally take possession, in the name of King George III, of all the lands along the east coast. Over the wartime strip of Jackey Jackey and out over the pearl farm beds of the Kennedy Inlet past Somerset where John Jardine established the first Government settlement on Cape York in 1863. Fly past Albany Is near the site of Australia’s worst maritime disaster, when the Quetta, bound for England hit the Albany rock in 1890 and sank with heavy loss of life. Thence over the top of Australia to the tip of Cape York and over the reefs to Thursday Island and Prince of Wales before returning home
