Cairns city is not all that exciting, but the reason it’s so popular is because its right in the middle of the fascinating things that surround! Such as the Great Barrier Reef - Cairns is one of the best places to see the great barrier reef (Trips to the "OUTER" barrier reef start from $80 and can get to $200 pp).
The Cairns Highlands, Kuranda, Atherton, Malanda - here you will see the farming & fruit plantations, as well as giant curtain fig tree's and loads of spectacular waterfalls and the cutest animals ever the platypus. (Some great tours start from $90 *on the wallaby or Uncle brians have been recommended by the Lonely Planet *backpackers style trips).
Cape Tribulation and the Daintree is world heritage listed Rainforest and just beautiful - most tours include a cruise along the Daintree River spotting Crocs (in the WILD) aswell as famous boardwalks and the spectacular Cape Trib Beach "where the rainforest meets the reef", there is heaps to do up here (if you’ve got the money) such as reef trips to unspoilt reef sites, jungle surfing above the rainforest canopy, horse riding along the beach, or just trekking through the national parks.
There are heaps of Tourist Information Centres in Cairns so your never short of information, none of them charge a booking fee either and most of the time can get tours cheaper through them than booking Direct because most offer package deals. MY TIPS for visiting CAIRNS: Bring lots of money, or risk being stuck with not much to do, the city is nice but why spend all the money getting here only to see and do nothing. Don’t go to crazy partying because most tours start extremely early around 6:00 am. Visit the Cairns Beaches or crystal cascades for free fun. Don’t worry to much about the shopping here you can pretty much buy everything back home. Visit RUSTY'S fruit markets it’s a great sight (on weekends).
