The Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia was officially designated a Marine Park in 1975. The marine park starts in the south at Bundaberg and extends north to the tip of the Cape York covering an area of about 350,000 km² and encompassing 618 islands and 300 coral cays, 760 fringing reefs within over 2,900 coral reefs.
The Great Barrier Reef around Townsville focuses on Magnetic Island just 20 minutes across the calm waters of Cleveland Bay from Townsville by ferry. Other islands nearby include Orpheus, Bedarra, Dunk, Hinchinbrook Islands. Each island offers a different style of accommodation, from rustic to romantic.
