Leave the bustle of Brisbane behind and head for Queensland's oldest provincial city Ipswich. Renowned for its architectural heritage this is a nice place to meander around stately homes and gardens.

Next on the itinerary is a relaxing drive through the Scenic Rim, one of the most picturesque areas in South-East Queensland. Take the Cunningham Highway at the small town of Aratula and prepare for the steep incline of Cunningham's Gap. The spectacular views are well worth the effort.

Continue on to the city of Warwick which boasts some of Queensland's finest historical sandstone buildings. From Warrick head south of the Border Ranges into New South Wales. Pass through the tiny township of Killarney, just out of the town are the spectacular Queen Mary Falls.

From the falls, head east and pass through the townships of Woodenbong, Kyogle and Murwillumbah. The largest extinct volcano in the Southern Hemisphere, Mt Warning casts its large shadow across the horizon. The townships of Lismore and Byron Bay are not far from these parts but technically not on the established Border Range Loop Drive.

Follow the Nerang-Murwillumbah Road back across the Queensland border, through the World Heritage-listed Springbrook National Park, home of the famous Natural Bridge Waterfall.

Drive north through the small township of Advancetown. Advancetown has been rebuilt, the original village now sits at the bottom of the Hinze Dam. Next on the agenda is Tamborine Mountain, a haven for talented artists.

Heading down the Tamborine mountain is the old sawmilling town of Canungra. The sawmill's old tramway tunnel is cut through thick sandstone and worth a picture or two. From here the journey leads up to O'Reillys Plateau in Lamington National Park. This is one of the most extensive Antarctic Beech cool temperate rainforests in Australia.

The journey back to Brisbane is just 76 kilometres.
