On the D'Aguilar Highway, 94 km north west of Brisbane is the small farming village of Kilcoy. The name Kilcoy has a particular Scottish lilt due to the number of Scottish migrants in the early 1840s. These pioneers cleared and settled on the land to run beef and dairy cattle. Extensive forests and national parks surround the township, and at its fringes lay the picturesque Mount Kilcoy and Sandy Creek Valleys.
Kilcoy is known locally as being the home of the mythical Yowie, Australia's equivalent of Bigfoot or the Yeti. The reported sightings are taken seriously, Yowie Park pays homage to the mythical creature and a statue has been errected on the highway.
Nearby is Lake Somerset a popular destination in warm summer months. During holiday periods, the parks entertainment may include a line up of, movies on a four metre screen, live bands, games and activities. Freshwater fishing is popular year round on Lake Somerset. Common catches include bass, golden perch and saratoga. Ask at the kiosk or Visitor Information Centre for the necessary permits to fish and boat on Lake Somerset.
