Yowah is a small style opal mining town and the home of the unique Yowah Nut Opal and Ironstone Matrix Opal. This type of opal is only found in this part of Queensland.
Opal was first discovered at Yowah 105 years ago. The original mine, The Southern Cross, is still producing today and the council provides a public fossicking area for visitors.
The town has numerous opal cutters and retail outlets where you can purchase the stones the area is famous for.
