Cunnamulla originated as a settlement in the 1860's at the intersection of two major stock routes, one running east/west from St George to Thargomindah and the other running north/south from Charleville to Bourke. The name of the town is derived from an Aboriginal term meaning "long stretch of water" relating to the Warrego River which passes through the town.
The major industries are wool, beef cattle and opals. Cunnamulla is the southern gateway to the Matilda Highway and lies at the crossroads to the Adventures Ways travelling west to Eulo and the Yowan Opal Fields and on to Thargomindah and Innamincka. Currawinya National Park is a birdlovers paradise and only three hours drive from Cunnamulla.
