Overview
Bookmark

Located at the junction of the Matilda and Overlanders Highway, the town is nestled against a backdrop of mineral rich hills and situated on the banks of the Cloncurry River.

In 1927 Cloncurry became the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service when a single engine DH50 named "Victory" (this aircraft built by Qantas in Longreach) took off with a doctor for its first mission.

Cloncurry also has a significant slice of mining history, which has brought significant economic growth to the shire and is currently set for another boom period.

History

In 1861 Burke and Wills with King and Gray, were the first known Europeans to come into the area on their ill fated expedition to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Burke named the river "Cloncurry" for his cousin, Lady Elizabeth Cloncurry of County Galway in Ireland.
