The Basalt Byways are two four wheel drive tracks winding between the landscapes north of Hughenden. These tracks take you on a journey through some amazing country featuring rolling landscapes of basalt walls and deep valleys. Basalt rock is typically the first lava to issue from a volcano bringing us back to our dinosaur days.
The area you travel through has a large diversity of soils and nature, boasting some excellent lookouts that show the depth and length of many of the valleys you will wind through. One lookout in particular has a view of the open downs area with the town of Hughenden in the distance.
Travelling on the longer of the two tracks, approximately 156 kilometres before connecting back onto the Flinders highway heading back into Hughenden, will certainly delight the four wheel drive enthusiasts. On both tracks you will cross the Flinders River, boasting wonderful waterholes to swim in, throughout the wetter months.
