Jundah is the administration centre of the Barcoo Shire. With a population of approximately 100 people it is the largest of the three towns within the shire. Jundah has a range of amenities and services. The Thomson River provides a scenic fishing and recreational area. There are a variety of fish to be found in the Thomson including Yellowbelly, Jew and Bream. Sheep and cattle are the main supporting industries in and around Jundah.
The district as originally settled by the Durack and Costello pioneer families. For twenty years or so it was an important opal mining area but lack of water caused work on the mines to cease.
