Moranbah is a modern town brimming with history. Moranbah was established in 1970 as a dormitory town for mines at Goonyella and Peak Downs. Today it is a hub of activity servicing local coal miners. Moranbah is situated approximately 200 kilometres south-west of Mackay. The townsite was originally part of the Moranbah holiday area of which 11750 acres have since been added.
On entering the township a large piece of mining equipment can be found, which is a monument to the contribution of the coal mining industry to the area. The town boasts good shopping facilities and also has a cinema complex.
In Moranbah local handicrafts are displayed periodically at the community centre and at the local markets held on the last Sunday on the month in the Town Square.
