To get a true perspective of the size and scope of this unique, growing Australian town, head to the Mount Pleasant Lookout. The city lights dazzle at night and the short and steep drive to the top is a must on any holiday itinerary. Not suitable for caravans. Only 10 minutes from the city heart.

Built by the South Sea Islander Community to provide a tranquil place to spot native birdlife and flora, The Lagoons is a wonderful parkland area. Located 5 minutes drive from the city centre, the area is popular with tourists and locals, for its tranquil atmosphere and great walking tracks.

Diving or snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef and around the tropical islands off Mackay is an unforgettable experience. There are a number of professional dive companies that are committed to making every dive experience memorable.

Novice and experienced divers can experience the reef and islands or be daring and venture to the sensational, historic 'llewellyn' shipwreck, just off Mackay.

Further Information Mackay Harbour is just minutes from the city and is one of the most accessible fishing locations of the region. The rock walls are dotted with fisherman keen to snare jew, mackeral, trevally, bream or tuna. There are also some great fishing spots along Pioneer River and they include:

  • East Point, at the river mouth (trevallly, whiting, bream and queenfish)
  • Off Forgan Smith Bridge (whiting flathead, grunter and bream)
  • Off the rocks beneath the Ron Camm Bridge (barramundi, bream, grunter and trevally)
  • Illawong Beach (Aka Far Beach)
