Overview

Located along fields of sugarcane, just off the pacific highway, the historic town of Beenleigh is an entirely unique experience for Gold Coast visitors. Beenleigh was once the business centre for the sugar industry with 14 sugar mills in operation at its peak period and famous for its rum distillery.

Located 35 km from the centre of Brisbane, Beenleigh, once a separate town, has, through the steady expansion of the capital, been engulfed so that it is now little more than a commuter-belt suburb. Beenleigh is just 45 km from Surfers Paradise.

Beenleigh Rum Distillery, now producing Inner Circle Rum, is one of the few rum distilleries left in the country. Built in 1864, it houses the oldest-surviving still in Australia.

The Rocky Point Sugar Mill, 14 km east of the Beenleigh, was built in 1879 and is still in operation. It claims to be the only privately-owned sugar mill in Australia. Now completely modernised the Rocky Point Sugar Mill has been owned by the Heck family for over 100 years.

There is a surprising abundance of attractions in this region to, experience an off-road driving circuit, Queensland's largest brewery, performance racing venues or work out at a number of impressive sporting facilities. The Albert and Logan Rivers offer a great days fishing for bream, whiting and trevally.

To complete the country town atmosphere, main street pubs and a tangible Aboriginal heritage, Beenleigh offers many rewards for the traveller. Beenleigh has been a vital connection between the capital city Brisbane and the Gold Coast region for close to one hundred years.
