The Gold Coast's famed board riding beach is Kirra Point. Kirra produces challenging waves for the experienced surfer, as well as smaller waves closer to shore for beginners. It is a great place to watch the experts at work and get some pointers if you are learning to surf. Home of Queensland’s first surf club, this region has provided a training area for many surfing greats. These beaches are renowned for having long, right-hand surf breaks. There are now three surf life saving clubs, little ‘nipper’ events and major surf competitions.
Try hiring a longboard for the day, guaranteed fun for the young at heart. Nearby Duranbah is another surfing hot spot.
It is only 1km from the airport on the southern side and has many accommodation units available. Kirra enjoys the many facilities it shares with Coolangatta. Head for dive sites at Kirra and Cook Islands to the south. The Oceanway offers walking and viewing platforms which are wheelchair accessible.
