Moura is located 192 km west of Gladstone and 676 km northeast of Brisbane via the Burnett Highway. It is a small town, which services its surrounding rural and coalmining industries.
The majority of export income of the Banana shire and the capricorn hinterland is derived from Moura and the Dawson Valley. It is home to the second largest wheat dump in Queensland, and is also home to the Queensland Cotton Gin, Queensland Ammonium Nitrate Plant and Moura Coal Mine.
'The Coal and Cattle Centre of the Dawson Valley', Moura's huge grain silos can be seen from a considerable distance. It gives the appearance of a typical Central West rural settlement, but with hints of its coal mining activities, such as the brass statue of a miner at the southern end of town. It commemorates the Moura Underground No 4 Disaster in which 12 miners lost their lives on 16 July 1986. Sadly, this tragedy was one of three to strike the town in its mining history.
