Minerva Hills National Park consists of a dramatic volcanic landscape with flat-topped hills. For keen, experienced bushwalkers wildlife viewing and bird watching are prevalent. Scenic Mt Zamia overlooks Springsure and spectacular jagged peaks provide a scenic backdrop.

In the grassy open woodlands, mountain coolibah, silver-leaved ironbark and gum-topped bloodwood tower over macrozamias and grasstrees. Dry rainforest with figs, stinging trees, pittosporums and vines flourishes in sheltered gorges and at the base of the sheer cliffs. Spinifex grasslands dotted with wattles grow on the summit. The park also supports spotted gum forests and low-lying heath.

Things to do

• Have a bush picnic with a view at Fred’s Gorge. Bring wood for the barbecues
• Picnic at Springsure Lookout and other sites. Take a fuel stove
• Go wildlife watching during the day. See grazing kangaroos and wallabies or even koalas
• Go spotlighting at night to see sugar gliders and greater gliders
• Enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding countryside from lookouts in the park
• There is a 2·2km walking track that leads to a lookout
• Discover Aboriginal history. Stone scatters and rock art are evidence of occupation
