Mount Tempest on this Island is probably the highest dune in the world, reaching 280 metres above sea level. This Island is the second largest sand mass in the world, after Fraser Island; its 19,260 hectares are mostly national park.
Moreton Island does have some small villages at Bulwer, Kooringal, Cowan Cowan and Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort. Tangalooma Resort was a whaling station until 1962.
Camping facilities are provided at four grounds, plus bush camping. Moreton Island was declared a national park to conserve native plants, animals and natural landscapes, and to protect archaeological and historical sites for future generations.
The large Island, managed for recreation, is popular for its long sandy beaches, clear freshwater lagoons, wildflower heaths, and high sand dunes.
There is one shop at Bulwer and one at Kooringal. The Island is only accessible by 4WD. Fuel is available at Bulwer and Kooringal. The barge trips are approximately two hours each way and bookings are essential.
