Chinatown is located in Fortitude Valley, 1.2km from the Brisbane General Post Office and features the most authentic Chinatown in Australia, the multicultural hub of Queensland and the cosmopolitan heart and soul of Brisbane.
Brisbane Chinatown was officially opened on 29 January 1987, the Year of the Rabbit. It comprises of an exciting array of traditional Chinese landscaping features including a pair of lions (donated from the People's Republic of China) at the entrance (Wickham Street end) to the Mall on Duncan Street, and a centrally located waterfall and pond supplementing the peaceful garden setting designed environment.
Recent upgrades have seen the installation of a series of Rotundas. The sizes vary from large to small with each one having its own special effect, some displaying a two level turret or a double Rotunda etc. Each is roofed with an ornate Chinese style copying the Tang Dynasty era and a new entry gate (Ann Street end) constructed by builders from Qingdao City in the People's Republic of China, who also donated another pair of lions for this gate.
In this Mall you'll find a wide variety of multicultural restaurants with delightful delicacies. There are Chinese supermarkets offering rare imported and Australian goods for cooking international cuisine. Chinese herbalists and other Asian stores combine to create the most authentic Chinatown district in Australia. There is also duty free shopping, jewellers, gifts and bookshops and a wide variety of other shops.
