Often referred to as the crossroads of the north, Katherine is the third largest town in the NT. Situated 320km south of Darwin, Katherine is a thriving hub servicing pastoral properties and communities in the area.
Home to the Jawoyn Aboriginal people; the town is located on the banks of the Katherine River and encircled by breathtaking scenery. The Jawoyn used the river as their foundation, as it provided an abundance of food/water.
The main tourist draw card is Katherine (Nitmiluk) Gorge, covering an area of 3,000km of magnificent escarpment country. 13 separate gorges carve their way through Arnhem Plateau, and are home to an abundance of flora & fauna.
Other local attractions include Springvale Homestead, built in 1878, Katherine Art gallery and the Ghunmarn Culture Centre which is located in Beswick, both galleries house a fine collection of Aboriginal artworks.
Those wanting to explore Katherine in more detail should visit the Katherine Visitor Information Centre, which can provide detailed info on local sites. There are a number of historic sites around town, some managed by National Trust.
The town of Katherine named by explorer John McDouall Stuart after Catherine, the daughter of his benefactor.
