Jabiru is the town established after mining began in the 1970’s prior to Kakadu becoming World Heritage Listed. If driving to Kakadu you will invariably pass through this charming town. Winner of multiple Tidy Town Awards.
With the spectacular Arnhemland Escarpment as a backdrop, Jabiru is situated on a 13 square kilometre lease within Kakadu National Park. This makes it the only Australian town set inside a National Park. Jabiru is the stepping off point for excursions into Kakadu.
The Commonwealth Government leased the area to the Jabiru Town Development Authority for the purpose of building a town to house the workers and families for three uranium mines - Ranger, Jabiluka and Koongarra. Ranger is the only mine which reached production stage.
Environmental concerns arising from mining in a World Heritage Area has meant that Government supervisory bodies have been established in the area. Jabiru has miners, scientists and environmental specialists working in a unique relationship with the aim of preserving and eventually restoring this beautiful area.
The citizens of Jabiru take pride in their unique town and enjoy a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle.
