The town of Palmerston has a population of 23,400 & is 20km by road to the east of the Darwin central business district. It occupies an area of 5500 hectares. Palmerston has ten suburbs and is regarded as one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. It was named after the former British Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston and was first settled in the early 1980's.
Palmerston is best known as the site of the Australian Army's newest barracks, purpose built for the First Brigade as part of the Army Presence in the North Project. The Barracks occupy a total of 700 hectares and personnel are a familiar sight around town.
From airconditioned plazas, 24 hour shopping centres to unique boutiques, Palmerston has everything you could ever want. Palmerston has an extensive selection of art galleries and shops. For supermarket shopping, Palmerston has many of the major chains to ensure you can stock up on all the essentials -Target, Woolworths, Coles.
