The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and comes close to what you might imagine an island paradise to be. Beaches with no footprints and a hammock swinging between palm trees describes everyday life on the islands. There are no high-rise developments and no shopping centres, no restaurants and no resorts. It is secluded in the truest sense of the word; its closest neighbour Christmas Island is 900km away.
There are two atolls with 27 coral islands in the group. North Keeling Island is an atoll consisting of just one C-shaped island; South Keeling Islands is a group with only two inhabited islands, Home Island and West Island. The temperature averages 29C and rarely drops below 20C at night.
