Originally a German Lutheran mission in the 1880s, Hermannsburg retains some historic buildings including a stone church and schoolhouse giving it an unusual character. It is located on Larapinta Drive, 130 kilometres south west of Alice Springs near the entrance to Finke National Park and Palm Valley.
Hermannsburg was the home of the famous water-colourist, Albert Namatjira and his house which is open for inspection is located 3km west of Hermannsburg on the Areyonga Road. Several of his grandchildren carry on his artistic tradition.
If continuing west towards Kings Canyon, Hermannsburg is the last fuel stop and outlet to purchase a Mereenie Loop Pass. Visitors should be aware that this is an alcohol free community and penalties apply to people taking alcohol into the community.
