Transport Heritage Centre Alice Springs 

In 1878, work began on the Great Northern Railway, which was to cross the middle of Australia from Port Augusta to Darwin. The southern section of the line finally reached Alice Springs in 1929 and the train that ran on this line became known as The Ghan. The Ghan was named after the Afghan camel drivers who had contributed to the development of communication and transport links in inland Australia. After the Old Ghan ceased running in 1980, the Legendary Ghan began its journey and now travels to Alice Springs on a standard gauge railway from Adelaide via Tarcoola, west of the old track.

The original Stuart Station in Alice Springs was never built because of the war and depression but the Alice Springs Station building was built to the original plans. There is also a museum, which tells the story of the harsh living and working conditions that the early pioneers had to endure when laying the track.

The Katherine sheds are home to the many locomotives kept here and is where the restoration of carriages and maintenance is done.
