Perricoota - meaning Red Kangaroo - was once a travelling stock route that has developed into a diverse collection of wineries, heritage sites, golf and sports clubs. This tiny wine district has sprung up around the township of Moana, on the northern shores of the Murray River. A district of rolling sand hills nestled between extremely fertile plains of riverine soil, Perricoota has been described as the new sensation of modern Australian wines.

It boasts the luxury of being the smallest wine region in New South Wales. Wine in this region is comparatively recent, with the first significant plantings of grapes being in the 1990s. There are two significant producers. St Anne's, a young winery uses grapes from both young and old (30 years) vines, and Riverview Estate a young vineyard was only planted in 1996.

Combine two of the highlights of the region by taking a riverboat, or an historic paddlesteamer down the river to sample wine at the cellardoor.

Things to do

  • Excite the kids by taking them to the nearby Moama Adventure Playpark, a 1600-square-metre fort, featuring flying foxes, bridges, tunnels, slides and sandpits
  • Take a stroll round the old fashioned and historic Port of Echuca, where some shop keepers still dress in period costume
  • Watch the paddlewheels of magnificent boats churn through chocolate brown water, hear the woodfired steam engine whistle aboard a paddle steamer cruise
  • Indulge in a free slice of fudge at the antique penny arcade while spending a fistful of pennies on the old game machines
  • Watch a Charlie Chaplin classic in the 1920s-style picture theatre
  • Morrison's Winery makes a nice spot for lunch, with an abundance of birdlife, a billabong & walking tracks
  • Sample the fortified wines, a speciality of the region

Further Information

  • Leading Varieties of the Perricoota wine district are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon
  • Fortified Varieties include, Grenache, Frontignac, Malbec and Mourvedre (Mataro)
