Perricoota - meaning Red Kangaroo - was once a travelling stock route that has developed into a diverse collection of wineries, heritage sites, golf and sports clubs. This tiny wine district has sprung up around the township of Moana, on the northern shores of the Murray River. A district of rolling sand hills nestled between extremely fertile plains of riverine soil, Perricoota has been described as the new sensation of modern Australian wines.
It boasts the luxury of being the smallest wine region in New South Wales. Wine in this region is comparatively recent, with the first significant plantings of grapes being in the 1990s. There are two significant producers. St Anne's, a young winery uses grapes from both young and old (30 years) vines, and Riverview Estate a young vineyard was only planted in 1996.
Combine two of the highlights of the region by taking a riverboat, or an historic paddlesteamer down the river to sample wine at the cellardoor.
