Deniliquin - a major rice growing area, is infamous for being an oasis of green on the edge of hot dry plains. Welcome to the Riverine plain, which stretches northwards in what is the flattest land on earth. This is gentle beginnings to the edge of the Outback.
The Edward River, fringes the world's largest red gum forest, a sanctuary for birds and wildlife abound. Within this a network of forest trails offers bushwalking, camping, biking and bird-watching. You can kayak, swim, fish and water-ski on the river.
The town itself has been awarded with The Guinness Book of Records title ‘Ute’ capital of the world. In 2005 over 6000 utes travelled across the nation to join the official count. Every September the town holds a Ute Muster festival.
