The town of Wymah is located very close to the border of Victoria, in the south east part of the Riverina. The town’s main claim to fame is the ferry and bridge that cross the Murray River. The bridge has been assessed as being of local significance.

There are only two ferries that cross the Murray, and the one at Wymah is dependent on the Hume weir water levels. This is a bit unreliable for travellers wanting to make a concrete itinerary for crossing the Murray but information on the service can be obtained from the RTA. The ferry carries 2 cars at a time and is free.

Lake Hume provides an ideal site for a diverse range of water sports to do during the warmer months. Popular pasttimes include sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, swimming and fishing. Golden Perch, Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout and Redfin have all been spotted.

Things to do

  • Retreat at Wymah Valley Retreat. This covers 100ha with 2 km of private foreshore on the banks of Lake Hume
  • Water levels permitting cross the Murray on the quirky car ferry
  • Indulge in a myriad of water activities at Lake Hume
  • Drive the 60 km drive along the Murray from Wymah to Jingellic. Check out the old Dora dora pub along the way
  • Camp at Clarkes Reserve, Neils Reserve or Burrowye reserve. All have no faclilities but are reportedly excellent spots. Free camping just below the pub at Jingellic is available with cold showers
  • There is a great swimming spot near the pub at Tintaldra 89km from Wymah

Further Information

  • The Wymah Ferry is often closed due to low water levels. Get a detailed traffic report before you leave from the RTA. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au
