The Murray River forms a large part of the border of Victoria and New South Wales. Barooga is located in the Riverina district of NSW, 700 km south-west of Sydney via the Hume and Riverina Highways. It is a popular tourist resort town.

The Murray, with its towering red gums and sandy beaches, is one of Barooga’s biggest attractions. Popular activities are canoeing, boating, swimming, bushwalking and fishing.

The small section of land between the town and the river has forest and wetland areas. It is crisscrossed by unsealed tracks which span out from the town's roads, granting access to the many beaches to the north of town.
