This inner-west suburb, just off the CBD and near Central Station, features a multicultural heritage that instigated the plethora of restaurants on it’s main drag, Glebe Pt. Rd. These days the young and fashionable look sip coffee and go shopping while the backpackers wander in and out of the internet cafes before deciding it’s a sensible hour to visit the best pub in the area, The Toxteth.
While in Glebe why not visit the Malacological Society of Australasia. The “prime objective of The Malacological Society of Australasia (MSA) is to promote the study of molluscs.” such as octopus and tree snails!
Get sick of mollucs and the shopping in Glebe Pt Road offers an eclectic alternative. Funky little delis and artisan craft shops, ranging from secondhand clothes to alternative therapies, rub shoulders with fashions the young and fashionable get kitted up in. Glebe Markets on a Saturday are a must for picking up that certain knick-knacky something you mightn’t find at home. There are also arty little cinemas and libraries and lots of book shops.
It’s a ripper of a place, Glebe, get there and you can tell people you’ve been to somewhere with a name like ‘Glebe’. Say it: ‘gleeeb’. ‘Gleeeeeeeb’. It’s a name for a cute alien pet the Robinson’s might’ve picked up in Lost in Space while cowardly Dr Smith calls the robot a great bumbling booby.
