The iconic Hyde Park is a rectangular sanctuary of lush green in central Sydney. The park contains well-kept gardens and trees that extend north to the shore of Sydney Harbour. Originally a racecourse and sporting ground it is now a place for Sydneysiders to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Majestic monuments dominate the parkscape. The elegant Archibald Fountain was donated in honour of Australia's contribution to the Great War. Nearby the Nagoya Gardens feature a giant outdoor chess set. Behind the 'Lake of Reflections' or 'the Pool of Remembrance' is the ANZAC War Memorial. The impressive art deco monument consists of of a 104-millimetre gun from a German light cruiser. A 125 foot Obelisk erected in 1857 is decorated with Egyptian features while the eastern side of Hyde Park features the Sandringham Gardens.

Over the warm summer months the park becomes particually lively. The Festival of Sydney provides plenty of free entertainment.
