Yarrangobilly Village, situated in the central north of Kosciuszko National Park is a place of rich history and heritage though is presently almost a ghost town. A lone homestead named 'Cotterill's Cottage' and various picnicking locations are the only establishments that now occupy Yarrangobilly. Graziers inhabited this village in the 1840’s and the Coterill Family still lived in the cottage that was converted to accommodation in the 1950’s.
Yarrangobilly means ‘flowing stream' in the language of the Aboriginal tribe native to the Snowy Mountain area. The village is still a stunning place to visit all year round. In autumn, the trees that were planted by settlers begin to change colour and the landscape prepared for the snow-covered winter to come. Yarrangobilly is arguably the northern most location that snow falls in the Snowy Mountains.
Presently, visitors come to Yarrangobilly to have a look around the countryside, stop for a picnic and take advantage of the fantastic fishing spot. Despite the apparent spoilage of the river systems, the Yarrangobilly River runs almost as pure as it did before human intervention.
Yarrangobilly is located on the Snowy Mountains Highway noth of Kiandra.
