Jingellic, a pleasant leafy town is located near one of the river crossings on the upper Murray River. Across the river on the Victorian side are the towns of Walwa and Tintaldra, on the NSW side is Corryong.

The Murray River is the beat of this tiny village and the lifeline for a great deal more. The nearby Murray 1 Power Station, is still one of the world's greatest engineering feats. Water drives the turbines that help provide electricity to southeastern Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

Also considered to be of significant and historical importance are the remnants of the old bridge (once a customs house taxing passers on the Victorian side). According to legend, locals avoided the tax by smuggling goods across Horse Creek. Progress eventually caught up and a new bridge that bypasses Jingellic was constructed. The new bridge makes the state of Victoria just a 6km journey away.

Things to do

  • Drop a line in the waters of the Upper Murray for rainbow trout or the enormous Murray Cod
  • Hire a canoe, bicycles or a 4WD and explore the area at leisure
  • Head up to Khancoban a 40 minute drive, and white water at the mouth of the Murray
  • Bring clubs and have a whack on the Walwa golf course. Tennis courts are also available for public use here
  • Trek the Hume & Hovel walking track through bush. Ascend the great Pine Mountain, the largest monolith in Australia
  • Celebrate the heritage of the high country in April at The Man from Snowy River festival in Corryong
  • Drive the 60km stretch of road along the Murray River to Wymah where the car ferry sometimes crosses
  • Camp for free below the Jingellic Pub
