Vist Adelong and discover a charming small town in the Riverina district with a population of 900 people. Compare this to the hustle and bustle of its gold rush days and you will find a pleasant peaceful destination rich in culture and heritage. The gold rush came about in 1855 resulting in a population boom of 5000. This rush of luck continued and in 1860 the town's population increased to 20,000 people. With the decline of gold the town diminished dramatically, leaving behind a charming historic 19th century town.

Set on the banks of the Adelong River and decorated with an abundance of deciduous trees, Adelong boasts an impressive collection of historical buildings. Adelong's importance in Australia's early mining history has been recognised by the National Trust of Australia with a large section of the town being classified.

Among the historical classifications are the Royal Hotel, the old Bank of New South Wales built in 1882, the Post Office built in 1886, the Apex Park and The Old Pharmacy built in 1877, an old miner's dwelling built in the late 1800s, St Andrew's Presbyterian Church built in 1878, the Wesley Uniting Church built in 1886, the Police station & Adelong Court House built in 1874, Adelong Public School completed in 1877 and St James Catholic Church built in 1862. Victoria Hill is the most rewarding recollection of Adelong's gold mad history. Get a copy of Welcome to Historic Adelong from The Bank. It includes a map and detailed instructions for your own discovery of Adelong.

Things to do

  • Head along to the Adelong Museum which is open weekends from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m
  • Browse art at the Red House Gallery and Garden. Open daily from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m
  • 97km away is the town of Uranquinty, which has - apparently - the best and most popular bakery in the area
  • 127 km away is The Rock, climb for panoramic views, but be warned - only for the very fit
  • Closer to Adelong is the Adelong Patchwork Cottage which is very quaint
  • Play a round of golf at the Adelong Golf club
