At the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, six hours drive south-west of Sydney, Tumbarumba is more than famous. A major drawcard for the old style village is the trout-filled, snow-fed streams that thread through pristine alpine wilderness.
Bush hiking enthusiasts can retrace explorers Hume and Hovell steps on a 12-km walking track that follows Burra Creek. It cuts through a tunnel built during the gold-mining days in the 1800s.
Not much has changed since then.
Tumbarumba is still a charming town with well conserved old buildings. It is surrounded by vineyards, trout streams and High Country sheep stations. Views of the magnificent Snowy Mountains including Mt Kosciuszko surround the Shire. The nearby towns of Khancoban, Rosewood, Jingellic, Tooma, and Laurel Hill add to the quaint Alpine charm of the region.
