Linked to Leeton by a flat 7-km cycleway, is Yanco, meaning ‘the sound of running water’. Yanco holds a special place in Leeton Shire and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, as the village was the starting point for crucial development in this region. The M.I.A was a massive project, commenced in the first decade of the twentieth century, bringing an oasis of green fertility to the flat, dry plains of the Riverina.

Much of this area was designed in 1914 by American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, who also designed the city of Canberra. Nearby Leeton has 21 listed art deco buildings, including the impressive Roxy theatre.

Today the area is one of largest fruit and vegetable growing regions in Australia. There is an abundance of parks, wetland areas and museums that visitors and locals alike are encouraged to explore. Dont forget to stop off at some of the local wineries to complete your diverse and interesting experience of Yanco.

Things to do

  • Swim, fish or BBQ at Yanco Weir on Murrumbidgee River. Boat or water-ski at Middle Beach Forest Park or Turkey Flat Ski Beach using the boat ramp
