24 km west of Leeton is the small village of Whitton. It lays claim to being the oldest town in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. In the early days the settlement was called 'Hulong' before being officially gazetted as Whitton. The town retains an essence of the past with a smattering of lovely historic buildings.

Today Whitton is a tiny town of 400 people with huge rice and grain storage facilities for the surrounding area. The Murrumbidgee Irrigation area grows most of the fruit and rice in New South Wales.

The Gogeldrie Weir which is 14km to the south east of Whitton is a lovely spot to indulge in a picnic with well established facilities.

Things to do

  • Picnic at Gogeldrie Weir
  • Revisit history by wandering round the historical buildings. Of particular note are the post office, which still has original counters & safes, the McGaw Presbyterian Church built in 1900 & St John's Anglican Church, built in the early 1890s
  • Go to the Courthouse & Gaol Museum. Dating back to 1890, it houses early farming and irrigation equipment, photographs & other exhibits of local history. There is an antique steam-driven traction engine out the front. Open 10-1 on Tuesdays and 1-4 on weekends or by appointment. PH 02-6955 2691
